When most people think of breast surgery — whether a lift, reduction, or reshaping — they imagine what happens in the operating room. What many don’t see is what happens before the first incision is made: the planning, marking, and measuring that are critical to a successful result.
As a plastic surgeon, I’ve developed a unique approach to breast surgery that begins with a set of simple, yet powerful tools: a plumb line, a long ruler, and a circular template often referred to as a “cookie cutter.” These tools have become part of my signature technique — one that prioritizes symmetry, balance, and minimal scarring.
Inspiration from Global Best Practices
Years ago, while watching a training session by an American-trained plastic surgeon, I observed how he took his time with patient markings. He was precise, almost artistic, carefully planning how to achieve near-perfect breast symmetry. That moment changed my perspective.
Since then, I’ve adapted and refined the technique to suit the needs of my patients in Nigeria, including those presenting with extremely large breasts. In one remarkable case, I removed 6.6 kilograms of breast tissue using this method — all while maintaining excellent cosmetic results and reducing the risk of complications.
A Technique That Preserves Beauty and Confidence
Traditional breast reduction methods — such as the McKissock technique, anchor pattern, and lollipop incision — are widely accepted in plastic surgery. However, they often leave additional scarring or create what we call upper pole emptiness, where the upper part of the breast appears flat or hollow after surgery.
My approach focuses on:
- Creating a single vertical scar for a cleaner, less visible result
- Maintaining upper pole fullness, which gives the breast a youthful, natural contour
- Enhancing symmetry and projection, even in complex cases
These aesthetic goals are especially important for women who seek surgery not only for physical relief but for renewed confidence and self-image.
Complications Are Rare — But Real
As with any surgery, there are risks. We occasionally encounter issues such as wound breakdown, hematoma (internal bleeding), poor scarring, or pseudoptosis (where the lower part of the breast droops while the nipple remains in place). However, our careful preoperative planning and surgical precision have helped us minimize these complications and achieve consistently high patient satisfaction.
